i don't like the thought of "beauty pageants" especially when the filipino culture in america is centered around that. when you think about it. . what does it boil down to? who has the most money? yes, the idea of materialism and objectifying the female is what i'd like to be known for as a female and filipina. what's this all about?

can someone please explain? i would like to think of us as being progressive. i suppose i understand that we are all subcultures of the main filipino culture and somehow we should be able to maintain meaningful relationships but it clashes, don't you think? but, how do beauty pageants allow us to be progressive? how does placing filipino women into certain body frames of appearance help us to unify and strengthen the collective identity that we embark? i would like to call it "jealousy" but it's so much deeper than that. i admit it, i was offered chances to enter a pageant, but this was when i was skinnier. so we're making these filipinas fit a certain stereotype in order to win a title and a free trip to philippines so that they may be idolized? what good does that do for the country and the millions living in poverty and the poorly built infrastructure. i do not understand the benefits of winning a title such as "ms. iloilo" when we're not even in the philippines. shouldn't it be miss rancho penasquitos filipino american? do we not want to recognize that we are in the united states selecting filipino girls to represent a city that they do not know.

how many of these women are educated about the hardships that filipinos, those from the philippines have to endure. sure we can go to borocay and forget about all the poverty just behind the white sandy beaches, but it's a reality. philippines is a 2nd world country, to me it seems like a 3rd world country only because i'm only familiarized with the economy of japan and the united states.
